Debby Aceves, has deep ties to the Earl Warren Show Grounds. Her grandfather, Tim Badillo is in the Santa Barbara National Horse and Flower Show Hall of Fame, and her husband, Roger Aceves served on the board of directors of the SBAA as Board President. An active community volunteer, Debby currently is a member of the Santa Barbara Woman's Club, serves as president of the Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network, and on the board of directors of the Family Services Agency. As a Presidio descendant, she volunteers on both the Development Committee and the Genealogy and Descendants Committee for the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. Her other interests include antiques, organic gardening, cooking, and "field trips" with her book club friends of many years. She lives in the city of Goleta.
Laura moved here with her family in 1965. The parting gift that the United States Army had for the family was her father’s transfer to his ultimate retirement home, as a reward for George Dewey’s 31 years of military service, the last five years being in Maryland.
The family bought two horses shortly after they arrived, a half-Arab mare and her 3/4 Arab Filly (sire Ibn Kistan). The Showgrounds became a common venue for family weekends, and Laura leaned close to the railing to see the horses going around in the Arena, with the greatest thrill being the Lippizanner Stallions from the Disney film.
Of course, the Fiesta Rodeo was never to be missed.
Many years later, Laura was honored to be told that her application to be on the Board of the Showgrounds was being reviewed. Many people do not know that the Earl Warren Showgrounds (named after former California Governor Earl Warren—later Chief Justice of the United States) is actually a property of the State of California, called the “19th Agricultural District,” and the individuals on the Board are appointed by the Governor. She was delighted to learn that her application had been approved, and she took office in December (year). For the next several years, the 19th Agricultural District went from being in the red to being comfortably in the black, and Laura became Vice-President of the Board. When a different political party took office, she reluctantly left the Board.
Fortunately, with the creation of the Santa Barbara Showgrounds Foundation, Laura is again able to help keep alive her childhood and adult memories of the legacy of the Showgrounds and to ensure its survival and prosperity for future generations of Santa Barbara residents.
Laura is a practicing attorney and mediator in Santa Barbara, and is proud to have served on a number of local Boards, including the Santa Barbara County Bar Association, Santa Barbara Women Lawyers and SBWL Foundation Boards (President 2001), ACLU, and Santa Barbara Blues Society.
